Thought For The Week July 15, 2019

I was praying on Sunday and felt the Lord tell me to read Isaiah 46.  As I read, I noticed that the main topic of the chapter was to tell Israel that there is no comparison between God (the true and living God) and the idols that were so prevalent in the pagan nations around them to which many of them had turned.

At first, I wondered if God had really lead me to read this or if it was just a random thought in my head.  Then I noticed two significant thoughts that were directed to Israel but very easily and clearly could apply to me and to Christian Chapel today.

The first applied to me, personally and came from verses 3-4 which read, Listen to me, descendants of Jacob, all you who remain in Israel.  I have cared for you since you were born.  Yes, I carried you before you were born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age.  I made you, and I will care for you.  I will carry you along and save you.

I am in a transition period in life, looking at retiring soon and this verse spoke to me.  God reminded me how much He was the one who orchestrated everything in my life and ministry.  I truly have felt like I’ve been carried along as He puts the plans together and makes things happen that I could never do.  Knowing what He has done for me up to now, how can I not trust Him, as He said, to continue to carry me through this period of watching my hair turn white?  This verse was a great source of comfort because the last several months have been quite stressful and, in many ways, uncertain.  Through all of that I can trust Him.

The second thought applied to my church, our church, and, for many of you readers, your church.  The transition here is also difficult for many of us.  We don’t know for certain what’s coming, but listen to verse 9-10, Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God!  I am God, and there is none like me.  Only I can tell you the future before it even happens.  Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.

Did you catch that?  Remember what God has done in the past and let Him be God!  No one else knows the future before it ever happens but we can trust Him to take care of things the best way because it’s His way.  I believe that God has a fantastic plan for the future of our church.  Remember that it’s really not our church, it’s His church!

As we think about our personal and corporate futures, do you think God is big enough to take us there and watch over us through the process?  Do you think He knows enough to fit things together for the best?  I am so glad that He shows up at just the right time with a word that gives me peace.

What about you?  Is there something about today or tomorrow that makes you a bit jittery or uncertain?  Are you wondering where God is taking you or your church?  Read over Isaiah 46:3-4 and 9-10, and see if, just maybe, God will say something to you that gives you some reassurance and rest in your spirit.  Just a thought.
