Thought For The Week November 18, 2018

This week, we will observe a national holiday established by our government leaders long ago for the purpose of recognizing the care and providence of Almighty God over our nation, our families, our endeavors, and our lives. As many as nine other nations observe a day similar to our Thanksgiving Day, yet few recognize it as a day to be thankful to God for His blessings.

The Bible encourages us to be thankful, not just on one day a year, but every day and in all things. Listen to Paul in I Thessalonians 5:16-18, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. I think it is significant that joyfulness (rejoice always) and communication with God (pray without ceasing) are mentioned in the same context as giving of thanks. A heart of gratitude ought to lift our spirits to rejoice and that gratitude ought to be expressed directly to the Lord continually.

The interesting thing is that Paul says we are to be thankful IN all circumstance, not FOR all circumstances. This tells me that some situations in life will not be enjoyable nor desirable but we are nonetheless to be thankful. For me, no matter where I am or what is happening, I know that God will never leave me and that He is for me and knows exactly what is happening. His love is forever and I can rest in that settled truth.

So, may I urge you, this week on Thursday and every day before and after that, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His mercy and love endure forever! (Psalm 106:1). Just a thought for this Thanksgiving season.
