Thought for the Week April 16, 2017

This Sunday we will gather to celebrate the most important event on the Christian calendar, if not the most important event in all of human history, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

One may argue that the Incarnation (Jesus birth in human flesh) or the crucifixion (which paid for our sins) are more important but, if you think about it, without the resurrection, neither of these events really makes a difference. The resurrection says that God won the victory through Jesus’ human flesh, through His death on Calvary, over death and sin. The resurrection is the foundation stone upon which everything else that we believe stands.

Paul said, If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain…if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins…If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. (I Corinthians 15:14, 17, 19). Christmas and Good Friday are validated and given power by the resurrection! The resurrection is God’s stamp of approval showing the world that Christianity is not just another religion started by some dead leader. Ours is the only faith on earth with a living Founder!

That’s not all. If Jesus rose from the dead, we benefit. Listen to something else that Paul said, In fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (that is, died). For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (I Corinthians 15:20-22). He is saying that Jesus rose to that we all will also rise from the dead. Sin and death came by one man, Adam, and forgiveness and life came by one man, Jesus. In Christ we will all be made alive!

Can you think of something of more value to the human race, to everyone on this planet, to you and me? I sure can’t. So plan to come and join us this Sunday as we rejoice and celebrate not only Jesus’ resurrection but our eventual resurrection. And invite someone who may not have a church to attend to come and sit with you. Be enthusiastic when you do because this is the greatest holiday known to man! Praise God! Just a thought for Easter.
