Thought for the Week September 11, 2016

Sunday, this week will be the fifteenth anniversary of September 11, 2001. Like the attack on Pearl Harbor and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, if you were alive on that day, you probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard of the attack on the World Trade Center. You also remember the shock and fear that gripped so many during the first few days that followed. We felt vulnerable and in need of help.

For several weeks after the attack church attendance in the United States went up dramatically as large numbers of people turned to God in the midst of crisis. Sadly, once the crisis was over and it looked as if we would remain safe the uptick in seeking the Lord stopped and America went back to business as usual.

May I suggest that we are no less vulnerable today than we were on September 12, 2001? There are likely more enemies of our nation today who would love to recreate or exceed the destruction of 9/11. We can be grateful that there are many government agencies who continually maintain a watch to protect us.

More dangerous than the political enemies who wish to do us physical harm are the multitudes of spiritual forces that continually bombard the souls of people in our land. Friends, we are seeing today some of the darkest moral corruption this nation and world has ever faced. That probably should not surprise us since Jesus said that in the last days, Many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. (Matthew 24:11-12)

Neither of these threats should cause us to shake in fear. Rather we should approach these days like the agencies that protect us from hostile attack. We must be watchful and increase our vigilance in prayer. Pray that the Lord will keep the enemies of our nation at bay but pray even more that the spiritual decline in this country would be turned into revival. Ask the Lord to protect our children from the secular lies and half truths that undermine their faith foundation and that He would protect us from the temptations and circumstances the enemy uses to try to lead us away. None of us is immune to the spiritual warfare being waged today. We all need God’s help!

In this election year, I think it is also appropriate that we ask the Lord to give our nation the leaders that will do what is best for us both politically and morally. Pray for our leaders as they have responsibilities that are too big for any human to handle. Ask for a great revival to sweep across our land and around the world. Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (I John 4:4). If Christians all over our nation unite to sincerely call out to the Lord, I believe that He will watch over us and we can experience the greatest revival the world has ever known. Let’s do it! Just a thought.
