Thought for the Week September 4, 2016

I have been discussing some of my opinions regarding where our country is going and what I believe are issues of importance to Christians when it comes to electing our governmental leaders. Let me emphasize again that the government is not going to FIX the moral degeneracy that has become what many call normal in our country. The only way to fix an immoral society is by fixing the hearts of its people, one heart at a time. For that we desperately need a revival within our churches. If the church of Jesus Christ is being influenced by society rather than influencing it for good, something is wrong. We need to return to our first love, Jesus, and really let Him live out His holy, compassionate, and loving nature through us. When that happens we will not be able to stop attracting people to Jesus and people will be changed! So continue to pray for revival for yourself, first, and for the church as a whole as well.

That being said, we can and should support putting people in leadership in our government who support moral practices and have a plan to implement them. I shared last week the two major party’s platforms with regard to religious liberty. That is a fundamental issue. The other issue that is a deal maker or deal breaker for me is abortion. As one who believes that God is the author of life, I believe that we should do everything in our power to protect every human life even when it still resides in the womb. The only instance where taking another person’s life would be justified would be to prevent that other person from taking my or someone else’s life and when the government which is empowered by God to reward good and punish evil carries out such a penalty for an egregious crime.

Abortion is an act that takes a human life and should be viewed with as much disdain as shooting someone on the street. The two major parties are miles apart in their standards with regards to this practice that, as of January 2016, has ended over 58 million human lives in our country. Despite being only 13% of the U.S. population, black women accounted for 28% of the abortions in recent years. Since 1973 over 15.5 million black babies have been aborted. Some writers call that genocide.

The Republican Party platform says this about abortion: “We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to children before birth. We oppose the use of public funds to perform or promote abortion or to fund organizations, like Planned Parenthood, so long as they provide or refer for elective abortions or sell fetal body parts rather than provide healthcare. We urge all states and Congress to make it a crime to acquire, transfer, or sell fetal tissues from elective abortions for research, and we call on Congress to enact a ban on any sale of fetal body parts. We will not fund or subsidize healthcare that includes abortion coverage.” There are several more paragraphs in the platform that relate specifics about opposing abortion.

The Democrat Party Platform specifically supports abortion and spending federal dollars, our taxes so fund abortion. Here is what it says, “Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. We believe unequivocally…that every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion—regardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured. We believe that reproductive health is core to women’s, men’s, and young people’s health and wellbeing. We will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, which provide critical health services to millions of people. We will continue to oppose—and seek to overturn—federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman’s access to abortion, including repealing the Hyde Amendment” (The Hyde Amendment is a legislative provision barring the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion except to save the life of the mother or if the pregnancy arises from incest or rape).

Friends, remember I talked about the idea that we can’t legislate morality which is true. But we can, and we should, choose leaders who support moral laws within our nation. I can’t, in good conscience, support anyone who does not stand against taking innocent lives. I firmly believe that this is the only true biblical stand for a Christian. If I vote for a candidate whom I know will either do everything he or she can to keep abortion legal and even expand it or will do nothing to ensure that abortion is limited and eventually stopped, I am basically saying it’s OK with me.

I know these are issues that are hard to discuss and there are many opinions on every side but I believe they are something we should think long and hard about while asking the Lord what is right in His eyes. I think we can reach conclusions that are true and right when viewed in light of God’s Word if we will make the effort. I believe God would come down on the side of life. That’s my opinion. What’s yours?
