Thought For The Week October 25, 2015

We are approaching a secular holiday of sorts from which “church people” often shy away. All Hallows Eve or Halloween carries with it visions of the macabre, ghosts, witches, demons, etc. Much is written about its origins which connect it to paganism, devil worship, or other ideologies that are incompatible with Christianity. Because of this, many Christians opt to turn off the porch light, keep their kids home, or create alternative activities to distract from the idea of Halloween. This is quite understandable.

A different way of looking at it might be to recognize that we are sent into all the world to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul said that we are Christ’s ambassadors sent into the world to plead with people to be reconciled to God (II Corinthians 5:20). He also said in I Corinthians 9:22-23, When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings. I believe that Paul was committed to finding ways to connect with the culture of his day so that he could be a living message of Jesus Christ in every setting.

Just because something seems to be the property of the devil doesn’t mean that God can’t use it to turn people to Christ. There are lots of ways that we can redeem what the enemy means for evil so God can turn it out for good. Realizing that children who trick or treat probably don’t have any idea about the origins of Halloween, don’t have any intention to be connected with demons or pagan practices, and only see this as an opportunity to get some goodies, some people choose to turn on the porch light and pass out extra special goodies along with pamphlets, notes, cards, etc. that point to Jesus.

Churches offer alternatives that are safer for kids than walking neighborhood streets and calling on strangers. What better way to redeem this day than somehow serving people who are coming to us? For the sixth year, our church will sponsor Trunk or Treat in our parking lot. We will offer a safe place for kids to walk trunk to trunk and get all the candy their parents don’t want them to eat. We rent inflatable bounce houses and provide hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn, and a place for parents to relax. All the while we intentionally project Jesus’ love in our attitudes and words. We give every family a note that tells them we do this to show God’s love with no strings attached.

If you are part of the Christian Chapel family, I urge you to get involved with this servant evangelism project. You can help to make Jesus known by simply opening the back of your car and passing out some candy. How easy does it get? This outreach is at its best when we have lots of trunks. Will you sign up, call the office, email me (at the address below), or contact us whatever way you can to say you’ll help out? If you can’t do a trunk, we need helpers to distribute food, register guests, monitor bounce houses, direct parking, and really connect with people just by smiling. Anyone can do it. We are counting on you to make this the best outreach ever! Just a thought.
