Thought For The Week May 17, 2015

Continuing on the breakdown of the Sixteen Fundamental Doctrines of the Assemblies of God, the third truth we hold is the deity of Jesus Christ. We believe the Bible very clearly proclaims that Jesus is and always was God. Just as the Father had no beginning and will have no end, Jesus has always existed as God. John writes in Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” He later identified the speaker as the Son of Man, who lived, was dead, and is alive forever more (Revelation 1:13, 18)

In order to be save the world from sin He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31, 35). Paul writes that He did not think He was taking anything from God by being equal with God but made Himself of no reputation and took on the form of a man so He could die on the cross (Philippians 2:7-8). He died on the cross to pay our penalty for sin and was raised from the dead by God’s supernatural power (Matthew 28:6; I Corinthians 15:4). He ascended bodily into heaven and sits at god’s right hand (Acts 1:9, 11; Hebrews 1:3).

This belief is a major issue of orthodox Christianity. The deity of Jesus Christ has been debated throughout church history. Some have said that Jesus was created by the Father to be the first in the order of creation and receive the title of Son of God. Others that He was not really a man but only appeared to be. If He was not God, His death for sin would have no value since He would have had sin Himself yet if He was not man, He would not have been able to take our place.

Today Jesus Christ’s deity is still subjected to criticism. Many believe that He was just a good man, an example for us to follow. They discount the miracles recorded in the Scripture and the incarnation as myth. Many cults deny or distort His deity to fit their teachings.

The Bible must always be the final authority of what is and is not true. I’ll share just a few of the proofs of Jesus’ deity found in Scripture. First, Jesus claimed to be God. In Luke 22:70 at His trial, They all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” Both the apostle, Thomas, and Paul called Him God: Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28), Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:13). Paul identifies Him as both supreme over all and the Creator of all things, By Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (Colossians 1:16-17).

While Jesus was on earth, he forgave people’s sins which the top religious scholars of His day said that only God could do (Mark 2:5-7). The writer to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus is worshiped by angels (Hebrews 1:5-9). The first commandment in Exodus 20, was that there were to be absolutely no other gods before Jehovah God. Worship throughout the Old Testament was reserved only for God and no one else. For angels to worship Jesus, if He is not God would be going against God’s commandments.

The most telling evidence is that Jesus used the name by which God identified Himself to Moses and the people of Israel when referring to Himself. In a discussion with the top religious scholars of His day, after they claimed Jesus was either demon possessed or not even a Jew (a Samaritan) and telling these scholars that Abraham had rejoiced to see His day, they wondered how Jesus could have seen Abraham being well under fifty years old. Jesus answered by saying, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58). I AM is the name God gave Moses when asked how he could identify God to the Israelites (Exodus 3:13-14). The religious leaders understood what Jesus was saying because they immediately picked up stones to stone Him as the penalty for blasphemy.

Logically you can look at it this way. Jesus claimed to be God. He either meant it literally of mystically. If He meant it literally and it is true, then He is the Lord, the Creator, God. If it is not true then He is a liar or out of His mind. If He meant it mystically then He is a guru like those in India. The other argument would be that Jesus never claimed to be God which means everything we believe is a myth but that doesn’t fit with the Scriptures.

If Jesus is God this means we can know Him (John 14:9-10) and it becomes the key that unlocks every other doctrine of our faith. It means He has the power to transform us and He has the right to our total surrender to Him. In addition, if He is God, it is fully appropriate for us to worship Him. Thomas Aquinas said, “If the incarnation didn’t happen then a more unbelievable miracle did. The whole world was converted by the biggest lie in history!”

This truth leaves only one question. Have you trusted in Jesus for forgiveness and eternal life? He did everything necessary for you to have life which we’ll cover in a later blog. Dig into this profound truth. It’ll revolutionize your life. Just a thought.
