Thought for the Week October 12, 2014

Are we on the wrong side of history? Some would have us believe so. This week the U.S. Supreme Court refused to rule on several cased involving same-sex “marriage”. By their inaction they allowed the lower court rulings to stand effectively overturning laws in those states that prohibit such unions and opening the doors to homosexual couples who want to “marry”.

A week or so ago, Ben Johnson of, noted that, “Among the stratagems employed by the cultural Left to discourage, dispirit, and dissuade the plurality of culturally sane Americans from opposing same-sex ‘marriage’ is the all-encompassing insistence that the fight has already been lost. The phrase of choice has been to say that proponents of traditional marriage are on ‘the wrong side of history.’”

But, he continued, “With at least 5,000 years of Western civilization normalizing monogamous heterosexual marriage, and the American experiment with redefining marriage a mere 10 years old, it certainly seems like I’m on the right side of history – the long one … the one authenticated by every society that produced human flourishing.”

What we are being told is that society, culture, history is inexorably marching towards blessing couples of the same sex and calling them “married”. One man being interviewed on TV said that eventually we will just “get over it” and we’ll fall into line and agree that marriage doesn’t mean man and woman only. I like what Johnson says.

Jeff Jacoby, who holds the distinction of being a conservative columnist for the very liberal Boston Globe, gave a helpful historical perspective. “History,” he noted, “Is littered with causes and beliefs that were thought at one point to be historically unstoppable, from the divine right of kings to worldwide Marxist revolution. In the relative blink of an eye, same-sex marriage has made extraordinary political and psychological gains. It is on a roll, winning hearts and minds as well as court cases. No wonder it seems to so many that history’s verdict is in, and same-sex marriage is here to stay.”

But talk show host, Dr. Michael Brown, reminds us that appearances can be deceiving and history is fickle. What we are more likely seeing is a social experiment that a ways down the road will be shown to be extremely detrimental to society as a whole and to children in particular.

Being on the right side of history, the tried, proven, and traditionally backed side is important but even more important here is being on the right side of God’s Word. It doesn’t matter what the political wind or the cultural perspective may be at any given time when the Lord says, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

God made us male and female for a purpose. Of course we know one of those purposes was so that we could continue the human race. Someone asked if you put 500 married homosexuals on and island in the Pacific and 500 married lesbians on an island in the Atlantic and came back in 100 years, what would you have? Precisely why God ordained marriage between male and female. But there is a greater purpose. It is in the union of male and female, at once the same but different, that the fullness of God’s image is revealed in man. This cannot happen through the union of two people of the same sex.

Dr. Brown cited the articles I noted above in his article which asks whether we should give up and throw in the towel. This is not an option. If we believe the Bible is God’s Word and that He ordained marriage as between one man and one woman, then we must continue to trust that the battle is not over and that marriage will win out in the end.

So keep praying, keep sharing the truth (in love), and keep telling those who represent you that there is only one course in God’s eyes. History by nature takes a long time and I believe that this ruse will eventually be exposed as a complete failure. One of the most important solutions to our country’s social problems is the restoration and elevation of the family, God’s first institution and the foundation of society. Just some thoughts to ponder.
