Thought for the Week April 20, 2014

Have you ever considered how fantastic it is that we have a Savior, Jesus, the Son of God, who not only paid the price for us to be forgiven but also rose from the dead and conquered death once and for all? This is the bedrock on which Christianity rests. If there is no resurrection as Paul clearly argues in I Corinthians 15, then there is really no basis for the Christian faith. I am thrilled every year when we celebrate this monumental day in the history of the world. The resurrection gives us hope which is something no one can really live without.

I ran across this on a webpage that was detailing evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and thought it would be worth passing on. Not that we need the concurrence of secular scholars but just to give you some idea of how powerful the evidence for a risen Christ really is. Check it out!

“Following a two day debate over the evidence of the resurrection between Christian philosopher, Dr. Gary Habermas (Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Religion from Michigan State University) and well-known Oxford philosopher and skeptic Dr. Anthony Flew, a panel of five philosophers from American universities (including the University of Virginia, James Madison University and the University of Pittsburgh) voted 4 to 1 in favor of the case for the resurrection, with 1 of the judges determining the debate was a draw.

“One of the judges even concluded that the historical evidence of Jesus’ resurrection was ‘strong enough to lead reasonable minds to conclude that Christ did indeed rise from the dead.’ Another judge remarked: “Since the case against the resurrection was no stronger than that presented by Dr. Flew, I would think it was time that I began to take the resurrection seriously.'”

The reference for this is in John Ankerberg and John Weldon, Ready With an Answer, (1997), pages 132-133, citing to Terry L. Miethe (ed.), Did Jesus Rise from the Dead? The Resurrection Debate, (New York Harper & Row, 1987), page xiv.

That is pretty impressive but the best evidence is the testimony of those who saw Him alive as Paul also records in I Corinthians 15:4-8 (New Living Translation) He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him. They spent the rest of their lives telling everyone they could that Jesus was alive. That is our hope and testimony today. Have you told anyone lately? Just a thought!
