Thought for the Week April 21, 2013

A thought occurred to me this week that I want to pass on to you. If you knew that you had a very short time left to live, say six months, what would you consider to be the most important thing you could do with that time? Would you work harder to make more money to pass on to your heirs? Would you go out and try to check off everything on your bucket list? Or would you just maintain the status quo, keep plugging along waiting for the inevitable?

As I thought about this I felt that I would want to be as proactive as I could in making a last ditch effort to bring everyone that I love into relationship with Christ. After all, the only thing any of us can take to heaven with us is those who also believe in Jesus and have a living relationship with Him. I would want all my children, all my family, all my friends to be with me!

Jesus left us a couple of thoughts about this. One He mentioned in John 9, when He was explaining to His disciples why a man was born blind. He said this, It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. (John 9:3-5 ESV). We can get some really sound truth from this statement. First, things happen to us and others not to punish us or somehow make life hard, but so that God’s works can be shown. Next, we all have only so much time. Whether I know how much time that is or not does not release me from being actively engaged in doing God’s work so that His glory may be displayed.

In other words, if knowing my time is short leads me to get serious about telling those I know about Jesus, why would I wait? Do I really know if I even have one day left? Jesus said that He had to be the “light of the world” while He was in the world. Now that we have Him residing in us, isn’t that our job also. Every minute we are alive is our time to shine the light.

Then in another place He said this, Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. (John 4:35 ESV) What makes me think that reaching lost souls is any more urgent on one day than on the next? Jesus said there are souls waiting to be saved right now! Why would we wait to share the good news when someone in our own families, our own workplaces, our own neighborhoods might just be ready to say, “Yes”, today?

So I just wanted to pass this on to you because it got me thinking why am I not doing this right now. What would happen in we all began to “lift up our eyes” as Jesus said and really look for those opportunities to invest in the lives of unchurched, unbelievers right now? Invest by spending time with them. Invest by sharing your love with them. Invest by praying seriously for them. Invest by daring to share the gospel with someone you love. Then invite them to come to church or to an event where they will hear the gospel. Invest and invite.

Think about it. What greater investment could you make than one that will last for eternity and will not tank with the stock market? Who could you invest in right now? Just a thought.
